Cuba is packed with places to explore and delicious foods to try. From its beautiful beaches and lively Havana streets to its incredible flavors, you’ll be overwhelmed with choices. That’s why I’ve put together a list of must-try Cuban dishes for your next visit. In my opinion, exploring local food is an essential part of any trip.
One of the challenges you might face in Cuba is deciding where to eat, given the abundance of options. To help you out, here are some of the top Cuban dishes that should be on your list:
If you’re a beef lover, try the braised skirt steak simmered in a rich tomato sauce, served over white rice with fried ripe plantains. Fried plantains are addictive and are among my favorite things to eat in Cuba.
A classic dish to try is black beans stewed with white rice, stuffed into a pork shoulder marinated with sour orange, garlic, and oregano, then roasted perfectly. It’s the ideal meal after a busy day in Havana.
Another flavorful dish is Vaca Frita, a skirt steak loaded with herbs and braised until tender. Served with lemon-infused onions and peppers, it’s a tasty and zesty treat.
For those with a hearty appetite, the ribs, braised to a glossy finish and soaked in guava BBQ sauce, are a must. This filling dish is perfect after a relaxed day at the beach.
A Cuban black bean soup, seasoned with oregano, is simply unmissable. Adding some bacon enhances the flavor, making it even more delicious.
One of the traditional dishes in Cuba, Tamales are made from freshly ground corn and spices, wrapped in corn leaves and cooked. They’re found all over the island and are a must-try.
Boliche, a dish of eye-round beef roast stuffed with chorizo sausage, is another traditional favorite. Slowly simmered with onions and typically served with rice, Yucca, and fried plantains, it’s a filling meal you shouldn’t miss.
Although not originally from Cuba, the fresh blue crab sautéed with local herbs has become a delightful dish found in some parts of the island.
Yuca con Mojo, a dish of cassava cooked in bitter orange juice, pairs beautifully with roast pork and is considered one of Cuba’s best foods.
Perfectly crispy Tostones, fried twice and seasoned well, are a tasty side dish or snack. They are initially fried to cook through, then fried again for a crunchy shell, and sprinkled with salt.
Picadillo, made with ground beef, potatoes, raisins, and olives cooked with wine and seasoning, is a tasty Cuban classic everyone should try.
Lastly, Rabo Encendido is a traditional dish with oxtail simmered in a flavorful marinade. Usually served with rice and plenty of fried plantains, you’ll find yourself having these delightful plantains often in Cuba.
