7 New Traditions I'll Embrace This Christmas

Christmas can be a bit ironic; it’s known as a joyful season, yet it often comes with stress and a relentless pursuit of perfection. This can make the actual day feel a bit of a letdown, especially since much of it is spent in a food coma, either half-asleep or fully napping.

Christmas Day is that one time of the year when indulging to the max seems almost obligatory—so bring out those expandable waist pants! Yet, strangely enough, the anticipation and activities leading up to Christmas often turn out to be more enjoyable than the day itself. Embrace the pre-holiday festivities by checking out the decorations, playing in the snow (if you’re lucky enough to have some—it’s not looking great for snow in London this year), devouring mince pies, and getting your Christmas movie ready to watch. All these little pleasures are far more rewarding than just focusing on making the actual day perfect.

Why reserve the fun for just one day when you can stretch it out over several weeks?

If you’re not a fan of waiting in lines or dealing with the last-minute rush, it’s best to avoid the stores during Christmas. Opt for online shopping instead. It seems like common sense, yet many people still plan a big day of gift shopping on the bustling high streets. Make things easier on yourself whenever you can, unless, of course, you enjoy battling the holiday crowds.

I’m guilty of this myself—planning to have everything sorted by November, only to be caught off guard by the 23rd or 24th of December! This leads to unnecessary stress and often means settling for a less-than-perfect gift, which everyone knows was a last-minute buy—even if they don’t say it. Instead, spend those few days before Christmas trying to set a new record for mince pie consumption.

It may seem a bit extravagant, but taking a few days off before and after Christmas instead of starting the holidays at the last minute is really worth it. The more attention you give these times, the more special they become. Prioritize time at home with family and friends, honing your turkey guzzling skills well before Christmas Day.

Sure, it’s the holidays, and mulled wine feels like a must at every gathering, but it’s crucial to remember that holiday drinking can lead to regret, with empty calories lingering long after the season. Enjoy, but be mindful.

Treat yourself and those around you with little indulgences as often and generously as possible. While this might sound contradictory to limiting holiday treats, remember that treats don’t always need to be food or drink.

It might sound trivial to some, but remember to enjoy the holidays your way! We often emphasize putting others first, but it’s possible to do that while still making sure you have time to treat yourself.
