Securing Your Journey to Machu Picchu: A Ticketing Guide

Securing Your Journey to Machu Picchu: A Ticketing Guide

Don’t fall into the trap of assuming you can just show up at Machu Picchu and get in without a hitch. Due to strict government quotas, you’ll need to secure your entry before your visit. Follow these steps to ensure you get your ticket to one of the world’s most incredible experiences, though the process isn’t as straightforward as it seems.

Navigating the ticket booking can be confusing, even for those familiar with complex online payment processes. There are several steps, pages, and time limits you have to follow to make sure you can visit Machu Picchu during your trip. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get your ticket without a hitch:

1. Start by heading to the official government website (http://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/). The site can be slow to load and might look outdated, but don’t worry, it’s the official page. It can translate into English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian, but you might need Google Translate for parts still in Spanish.

2. Once on the site, go to the “book online” section. Here, you can choose from several ticket options:
– Machu Picchu: Basic entry to Machu Picchu.
– Machu Picchu & Huayna Picchu: Includes entry to Machu Picchu and a chance to climb Huayna Picchu at specific times (either 7:00 AM or 10:00 AM).
– Machu Picchu & Montaña: Gives access to Machu Picchu and Montaña, with entry times at 8:00 AM or 10:00 AM.
– Machu Picchu & Museo: Provides entry to both Machu Picchu and the museum.

3. Check availability for your chosen option and proceed to fill out your details carefully. You can buy up to five tickets per transaction, so for larger groups, someone else will need to make a separate purchase. Add passport details for each person, double-check everything, and then move to the next steps to enter your address and accept the terms and conditions. You’ll receive a confirmation code valid for 24 hours—make sure you note it down.

4. To pay for your tickets, open a new window on the government website, then go to the “payments” section. Enter your confirmation code to bring up the billing page and provide your Visa card details. You’ll need this card when visiting, so ensure it remains valid.

5. After your payment is processed (this can take anywhere from a few seconds to an hour), proceed to the “check-in” tab. Use your confirmation code to see and download your tickets. It’s crucial not to lose these—save them as a PDF or print them out.

6. Upon arrival at Machu Picchu, you’ll need your printed tickets, the passport, and the card you used for purchase. With everything in hand, you’re ready to enjoy your visit!

Following these steps will help you secure your ticket without paying extra fees to agencies or operators who essentially do the same thing unless you’re booking a specialized tour. Enjoy your visit to the ancient wonders of Machu Picchu!
