There are so many amazing places in the UK to explore; you’ll really have a hard time choosing where to start. From tiny villages in the Cotswolds to the historic cities like Edinburgh and York, the UK is full of incredible spots and even a few unique traditions. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to see people chasing cheese down a hill? It’s an actual thing here!
I always remind people that the UK is so much more than just London. Sure, London is fantastic, but there are so many beautiful places across the UK that are worth visiting.
To start, you might want to check out Robin Hood’s Bay in the north of England. This charming little village sits right along the cliffs of Yorkshire on the Northern Sea coast. It has a long history, stretching back over a thousand years, and was once a haven for smugglers who sneaked alcohol in through tunnels beneath the houses. Today, you can enjoy a nice sherry at any of the old pubs around town. Be sure to stop by the Old Post Office for some cake and authentic Yorkshire tea.
Then, there’s the Lake District, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see for anyone visiting the UK. With several lakes, including the popular Windermere, the area is perfect for exploring nature. I personally prefer Ullswater, which is the second largest and less crowded. We enjoyed staying at Another Place: The Lake, where we took a steamer ride across Ullswater, hiked the local mountains, and even paddle-boarded.
Another gem is Cambridge, a small city packed with attractions. King’s College and its Chapel are must-sees, with a notable wooden screen gifted by Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn. Don’t miss brunch at Fitzbillies and enjoy a punting trip on the River Cam. Great St. Mary’s Church provides great views of the city, and it’s perfect for a day trip from London.
Malton is a food lover’s dream in the UK. This small market town has revitalized into a hub for amazing local eats and Yorkshire products. Spend your day discovering quaint shops, sipping freshly roasted coffee at ROOST, and indulging in gelato at Groovy Moo.
Bath is another historic treasure, with well-preserved Roman-era charm. Discover the Roman Baths, admire the Royal Crescent, and savor a Sally Lunn’s Bun, a local delicacy you’ll definitely want more of.
Surprisingly tropical, the Scilly Isles sit off Cornwall’s coast and enjoy warm currents from the Gulf Stream. Fly over for a unique island experience, explore the islands, rent a bike, kayak in the bay, and enjoy the lush gardens on Tresco Island.
Edinburgh, one of my favorite cities in Scotland, offers stunning history and architecture. Visit the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace, and explore the city’s hidden gems. It’s truly a beautiful city to explore.
If you’re in Cornwall, Watergate Bay is a lovely beach spot to relax and surf. The Watergate Bay Hotel offers a relaxed luxury stay with breakfast waffles to die for.
In Wales, a picturesque Italian village within Snowdonia National Park is a hidden gem that you must see. On a sunny day, it hardly feels like you’re still in the UK.
The Cairngorms in Scotland is a vast, stunning National Park that’s great for biking, hiking, and enjoying Scottish tea and cakes at the Druie Restaurant Cafe. Spot the deer, who roam freely in one of the best wildlife areas in the UK.
For fans of picturesque roads, The Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland is famous for its eerie, beautiful beech trees. It’s best to visit early or near sunset for a quieter experience.
The Cotswolds offers classic English charm with rolling hills, quaint cottages, and delightful tea shops. Bibury and Castle Combe are especially recommended. The Wood Norton Hotel provides a charming stay.
The Highlands of Scotland are packed with must-see spots like Bealach na Ba. Don’t miss lovely places like Applecross and Torridon, and if time permits, venture to the Isle of Skye.
For a city feel in Northern Ireland, check out Belfast. Visit the Titanic Belfast and the Ulster Museum or enjoy a tasting menu at Ox Belfast.
These are just a few highlights of the many incredible places that the UK has to offer.
