I’m a huge admirer of the Greek Islands, and it’s not just because of their breathtaking beauty! They offer everything you could desire—delicious Greek cuisine, cozy little bays, and that unmistakable Greek charm. With so many incredible places to explore, you’re sure to have an amazing time on your Crete holidays.
Over the years, we’ve visited a number of Greek Islands, such as Corfu, Samos, Skiathos, Rhodes, Santorini, Simi, and, of course, Crete. I’ve practically eaten my way through Greece because the food is irresistible!
If you’ve never visited the Greek Islands, you might think they’re all alike, but that’s far from the truth. Each island has its own unique charm, diverse Greek dishes, and quaint little villages to explore, making Crete holidays a delightful adventure. We were thrilled to discover some beautiful spots on our latest trip to Crete.
Here’s a glance at some of the top reasons to visit Crete and enjoy the best holidays ever. During our stay, we checked into TUI Sensatori, a collection of properties worldwide that are a cut above regular hotels. Since our trip was in October, we wanted to soak up as much summer sun as possible, and the hotel, right on the coast, was perfect for that. Our suite had private pool access, which was a definite bonus!
The hotel boasted numerous restaurants, and for some reason, I challenged myself to try them all—no regrets! It was the kind of place you look forward to returning to after a day of exploring or just spending a leisurely day indoors. I loved having plenty of time to explore the island as well as relax at the hotel.
Now, let me share some of our favorite things to do on your Crete holidays:
One of my favorite beaches in Crete is Seitan Limania, about a 30-minute drive from Chania. It takes a bit of effort to walk down to the bay, but the crystal-clear waters and visiting mountain goats make it all worthwhile. Remember to bring lots of water, sunscreen, and snacks, as the area is pretty secluded.
Chania is another must-visit city on the island. Check out the Venetian Harbour, stroll through the cobbled streets, and explore the charming boat shops lining the bay. For a delicious lunch, head to Mon Es, just a short walk from Venizelou Square, where you can enjoy fresh local seafood paired with Cretan salads.
If you want a break from the coastline, venture into the mountains to Hersonissos and its surrounding hamlets. This beautiful area is perfect for those who love authentic local restaurants and small art galleries. Stop by Taverna Harakas for some of the best Greek food, including Greek salads, Mousakka, and Arni Skordo.
Spinalonga Island, situated in the Gulf of Elounda, is about an hour’s drive from Heraklion. This historical site was once a leper colony and has remnants of Ottoman occupation. It’s easy to reach by boat and offers a fascinating glimpse into Crete’s past.
After exploring Chania or Heraklion, reward yourself with some beach time at Balos Lagoon. Although it can get crowded, especially during peak season, it’s still a top spot for beach lovers. Afterward, try the delicious food at Kafeneio Mezedopoleio Eilikrineia nearby.
Knossos is another historic site worth visiting. Once home to about 100,000 people, it’s considered one of the oldest cities in Europe. Although the palace is now in ruins, you can explore its historical significance and learn about theories regarding its abandonment.
When visiting Heraklion, be sure to check out the Venetian Loggia and the Fortress of Koules along the seafront. For a delicious meal in the city, Peskesi offers some of the best Cretan dishes around.
If you’re driving from Heraklion to Chania, stop by the Monastery of Arkadi, just 20 minutes off the main road. Explore the grounds and the history of the monastery, and visit the bell tower.
East of Chania, Georgioupoli boasts a remarkable church accessible via a stone walkway. Just be cautious, as it can be slippery. End your day with sunset cocktails at Corissia Park for a perfect end to your Crete adventure.
