Santorini is a fantastic island to explore in Greece. Its charming whitewashed buildings, stunning sunsets, and breathtaking clifftop towns, combined with wonderful weather, make it the perfect getaway. Besides its beauty, Santorini offers incredible Greek food that you’ll love throughout your visit.
While there are plenty of amazing places to explore, you can’t overlook the delicious food options available all around. During our trip, we enjoyed one mouth-watering meal after another! To help you enjoy your stay, here’s a quick list of must-try foods in Santorini.
Fava me Koukia is a favorite snack in Santorini that captured my heart. It’s usually served as a side dish or appetizer. Made from fava beans, it’s mashed into a tasty paste, much like warm hummus, and often served hot with a drizzle of Greek olive oil. This dish originated from the Cyclades Islands, where Santorini is located, and has been a staple in the traditional diet of the locals.
Gefthedes, perfect for lunch, are similar to meatballs, sometimes flattened into discs. They are especially flavorful when made with fresh beef or lamb, mixed with Greek herbs like oregano and mint for a fragrant experience.
Saganaki is a delightful treat that’s a must-try. It’s less of a dish and more of a cooking technique where cheese, usually feta, is fried to a golden brown with olive oil, then topped with honey. It can also be served with shrimp, making it great as a starter or main course.
Greek salads in Santorini taste exceptional, possibly due to the fresh, ripe tomatoes and local olive oil. Nearly every restaurant serves them, so try to enjoy one outdoors with a view of the caldera, especially refreshing on a warm day.
Greek koftas, made from minced lamb or beef mixed with herbs like oregano and mint, are usually skewered but sometimes served without sticks. These are typically accompanied by tzatziki, pita, and freshly-cut fries, making for a fragrant dinner option.
While technically not food, wine is a big deal in Santorini. Take a wine tour to sample local wines unique to the region, often grown on low vines that you’ll see on your way in from the airport.
Pomegranates are abundant in Santorini, despite not being native to the Cyclades Islands. They’re inexpensive and perfect for breakfast when ripe and juicy during the summer months.
Greek lamb is a staple with its aromatic flavor, appearing in many dishes like Stifado, a hearty stew. It’s more flavorful than beef and pairs well with freshly cut fries, offered in local restaurants.
Moussaka, one of Greece’s most famous dishes, is easy to find. Made with lamb, aubergine, garlic, and cheese, its recipe can vary, making each version taste unique.
Spanakopita, a favorite morning treat, is made from filo pastry filled with feta and spinach. It’s available at most bakeries or breakfast spots, perfect for grabbing on the go alongside a frappe.
Souvlaki features grilled lamb, beef, or chicken, and comes with fresh salad, tzatziki, pita, and usually fries. If not, you can always ask for some, as they’re a highlight in Greek dining.
Gyros are fantastic for a quick meal, featuring thinly sliced meat in a warm pita with cucumber, tomatoes, cheese, and sometimes chips. If wine isn’t your preference, washing it down with a chilled Mythos beer is a great alternative.
