How to Navigate Rejection: Steps to Take When You’re Told No

How to Navigate Rejection: Steps to Take When You're Told No

Some time ago, I remember applying to a UK university that usually ranks lower on the league tables, and they didn’t accept me. Fast forward to this year, I graduated from the University of Cambridge, which is not only top in the UK but also among the best in the world.

Similarly, a few years back, I was denied a credit card even though I already had one. Interestingly, a couple of months later, I secured a mortgage from the same company to buy my first home.

Earlier this year, I chatted with friends about starting a travel blog, and they outright advised against it. Fast forward six months, and my blog, Hand Luggage Only, has connected me with over 60,000 people worldwide who visit each month to join in my journeys and share theirs too. A big thank you to all of you!

The main takeaway from these experiences is that whenever someone tells you no, it’s easy to let that shape your path and stop you from pursuing what you truly believe in. My message today is, as cliché as it may sound, simple: don’t ever let anyone dissuade you from chasing your dreams.

I’ve been told no many times and gone on to achieve things that exceeded not just the expectations of naysayers but my own as well. People often say no based on their own limited view of the world, not realizing your true potential. Don’t let their doubts limit you—especially when you know in your heart the answer should be a resounding yes. Keep pushing forward until you achieve your YES!
