Yay!!! Hand Luggage Only just turned two years old. Well, technically, it was about a month ago, but we’ve been on the move, and my procrastination hasn’t helped either, which is why I’m only getting to this now. 🙂
We honestly never imagined being where we are today when we first started. Hand Luggage Only has really grown, and we’ve met incredible friends and had amazing adventures. It’s been a wonderful place to connect with fellow travelers worldwide and share our experiences. We absolutely love doing this and feel incredibly fortunate!
The blog began after years of travel, collecting tons of photos (I’m the type who keeps every picture, even my first ones from an old Nokia 3200). Blogging seemed like a great way to store and showcase these images rather than using Facebook. Looking back, it feels similar to when people would return home from traveling and share their developed photos with family and friends. The internet just makes the process easier now. 🙂
These days, more than 450,000 travelers visit our blog each month to read and share their stories. Plus, over 527,000 like-minded travelers have joined us on social media. Thanks to all of you, I’ve developed a phone addiction and often find myself laughing at your hilarious messages and comments while we’re traveling. The connection we have with you is mind-blowing, and we genuinely want to express our gratitude! You’re the best!!! Your feedback makes us feel truly special. We really appreciate every thought you’ve shared with us! 🙂
Right, I’ve strayed from the main point, so let’s get back on track. Without overthinking it (I’m writing this on the fly), here are some key lessons we’ve learned over the past two years of blogging:
1. There’s no single way to travel. Whether you prefer solo trips, group adventures, sunbathing on the beach, or any other style, it’s all valid as long as you enjoy it!
2. Don’t try to form a fixed idea of a place before visiting. Keeping an open mind is the best way to fully experience it. For example, expecting Cape Town to be like Marrakesh might leave you disappointed—appreciate each destination for what it is.
3. Travel isn’t just about money. Sure, you need some funds to travel, but you can have just as much fun regardless of your budget. It’s not about luxury or distance but about the experience.
4. Don’t wait for perfection before starting something. Waiting can often prevent you from beginning your journey. Just start and learn as you go. Remember, every journey kicks off with a single step. 😉
5. It’s perfectly okay to stay home, hang out with family, enjoy wine with friends, and binge-watch Netflix. One of the joys of traveling is coming back home.
6. Although we often travel with just hand luggage, sometimes checked-in baggage is necessary.
7. To improve at anything, you need to dedicate time to learning and self-improvement. Whether it’s taking better photos, learning a new language, or dancing better, practice is key.
8. Be your true self! While it might seem basic, it’s essential. Trying to emulate others can make you lose your uniqueness. There’s something refreshing about people who share their genuine perspective.
9. There’s no replacement for a good night’s sleep (sorry coffee). Being well-rested can change your whole outlook, though it took me years to realize this.
10. You are amazing! This is a more personal note from us. You’ve empowered and supported us in more ways than you realize, and we’re incredibly grateful. You’ve helped us chase our dreams, and we hope to do the same for you. The Hand Luggage Only community wouldn’t be what it is without you.
Alright, I’m getting sentimental again, so I’ll wrap it up here! Thanks so much, and have a fantastic day! 😉 🙂
