Top 12 Must-Experience Activities in Bruges, Belgium

I’ve gotta be honest, the first time I visited Belgium, it was all about the waffles for me! I know there’s more to Belgium, especially Bruges, but my stomach was calling the shots on that trip. However, Belgium really has so much to offer, with places like Brussels and Bruges being must-see spots. Let me share some of the top things you can do in Bruges, hoping you’ll love it as much as I did. It’s truly an awesome place to explore.

One spot you can’t miss is Rozenhoedkaai, located near Tanner’s Square. The views here are amazing; it’s where the Groenerei and Dijver canals meet, surrounded by gothic buildings. You can start a boat trip here to see Bruges by water, which is essential for getting the full experience. Just make sure to book your boat and walking tours ahead, as tickets sell out quickly.

The Belfry of Bruges is also a must-see. This medieval bell tower stands 83 meters tall and houses 47 bells. If you’re up for climbing around 350 steps, you can enjoy panoramic city views—a worthy challenge, though there’s a small admission fee.

When it comes to accommodations, Canal Deluxe offers a great stay right in the heart of the city. St. Salvator’s Cathedral, Bruges’ main and oldest church, is worth visiting for its neo-gothic architecture and Flemish art in the treasure chamber. For a coffee break, head to Cafe Pick for a fantastic latte.

Art lovers should not miss the Groeningemuseum, showcasing Flemish and Belgian art history, alongside 18th and 19th-century neoclassical works. It’s a perfect indoor activity when the weather turns bad. For a luxurious experience, Hotel Dukes’ Palace is top-notch.

Bruges City Hall is another highlight, dating back to the 12th century. It boasts stunning gothic architecture and a Main Hall that’s outstanding. There’s a museum on the ground floor worth a visit unless museums aren’t your thing.

Minnewater Lake is a lovely green space in downtown Bruges, complete with a picturesque castle and scenic views from Lovers Bridge. Walking from the train station to the historic center brings you through this beautiful area.

Begin your day in Bruges at Burg Square, surrounded by neo-classical buildings and a gothic town hall. Grab a waffle from Chez Albert or treat yourself to some Belgian chocolate at Chocoladehuisje. Want to try making your own waffles? There’s a fun workshop for that.

The main market square is lively with medieval festivals and fairs throughout the year. From here, you can also get a horse-drawn carriage tour to give your tired feet a break. Stop by At Tattie’s for some of the best waffles around.

The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a significant landmark, with its history dating back to the 12th century. You might experience the unveiling of the holy blood if you’re lucky.

To see Bruges’ windmills, just take a stroll down the river’s east side. St Janshuis and Koelewi Mills still operate today, offering an inside view at St Janshuis.

Explore Bruges on a canal boat ride; it’s a unique glimpse of this beautiful city. With five landing stages, these 30-minute tours run from March to November.

Finally, Old Town Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features stunning architecture. Enjoy Belgian cuisine at Park Restaurant or have a beer at De Garre bar. For a more kitsch dining experience, try Pro-Deo and De Bocarme, known for excellent food.
