Cancun, located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is a fantastic destination for those looking to unwind and have a blast. Whether you’re interested in trying every kind of margarita under the sun, partying, or swimming with whale sharks, Cancun has something for everyone.
While Cancun has been a hot spot for American tourists for a while, it’s relatively new for European travelers. Fortunately, travel options are expanding, making once-pricey destinations more accessible.
If you’re planning a trip to Cancun, here’s a handy guide. We stayed at the Breathless Riviera Cancun, which is a hotel we can’t recommend enough. It’s just 30 minutes from the airport, which is a huge plus. There’s no need for wristbands, and they offer everything you might need during your stay. The hotel provides 24-hour room service that you can order through a tablet in your room, as well as free minibars. If you opt for the Xhale club package, you get a private breakfast restaurant and a more exclusive area to relax.
The hotel has three sections: the luxurious Xhale club suites, the social Allure Suites, and the lively Xcelerate party zone, where the music and fun go on all day. We enjoy a good party, but not nonstop, which is why the Xhale club was perfect for us. You can join the party at the Xcelerate zone and retreat to the tranquility of the Xhale suites whenever you want. Plus, there’s a champagne bar for Xhale guests.
When packing for Cancun, bring your typical essentials, but consider a few extras:
1. A GoPro or underwater camera, perfect for capturing water activities like turtle swimming.
2. Insect repellent, necessary for excursions to places like Chichen Itza and Coba.
3. A hat to protect yourself from the intense sun.
4. Comfortable walking shoes for exploring places like Coba, especially if you plan to climb ruins.
5. A swimming shirt to prevent sunburn as your sunscreen may wash off in the ocean.
A few handy tips for visiting Cancun:
1. The weather is great all year.
2. Think twice before buying wooden souvenirs that might not last in colder climates.
3. Mexico is known for silver, but verify quality to avoid buying fakes.
4. Carry mosquito repellent for trips outside the resort.
5. There is a departure tax of about 975 pesos, which must be paid in cash.
6. For nightlife outside the resort, head to Playa del Carmen.
7. Many places in Cancun accept US dollars.
8. The cheapest time to visit Mexico is from May to November, with September and October being the most budget-friendly due to rain.
Enjoy your time in Cancun and make the most of this vibrant destination!
