Experiencing the Andean Explorer Train Journey Through Peru

Experiencing the Andean Explorer Train Journey Through Peru

Coming from the UK, we know train journeys can be much more than just a simple way to get from one place to another. The Andean Explorer train in Peru is a perfect example of this. Train trips are a fantastic way to take in the breathtaking natural beauty of the places you visit, especially in Peru. Plus, it’s a real treat when you’re pampered while the train rolls along! That’s why, even though we flew into Puno (via Juliaca), we chose to take the train back to Cusco.

The journey on the Andean Explorer train in Peru takes about 10 hours. On paper, this might make you question why anyone would opt for the train to Cusco, but this isn’t your regular train ride. The Andean Explorer is more about luxury than your typical train journey, and this is reflected in the price. It can actually end up costing more than flying and may be the priciest way to travel between Puno and Cusco. However, you’re treated to amazing views of Peru you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Along the route, you’re indulged with cocktails, wine, delicious food, snacks, and some entertaining activities. It’s an experience all its own.

Our adventure started at the train station in Puno, located right in the city center. We zipped past the scenic countryside and caught glimpses of farmers in the distance—sometimes it’s hard to tell if they’re waving or tending to their sheep! As we approached Juliaca, the train slowed down. Here, local markets have expanded onto the tracks, so we passed leisurely as locals greeted us with waves.

Once we hit the open stretches, it was time for a morning cocktail on board—because why not? The views of the Peruvian countryside are stunning, making you want to pull out your camera at every turn.

Before we knew it, it was time for lunch, complete with a side of wine. We started with smoked salmon and cream cheese blinis, moved on to beef bourguignon, and finished with chocolate cake—while soaking in the dramatic landscapes as we climbed higher in altitude. Reaching the highest point so far during our time in Peru, we even stopped for a bit to shop for souvenirs and take photos with the local llamas.

After some time exploring, we got back on the train and began our descent, noticing the sun’s return as we moved lower in altitude. This journey is unlike shorter train rides since you can truly relax without the pressure of keeping up with every sight. Just sit back and watch the beautiful Peruvian scenery unfold.

You won’t be on the train late enough for dinner, as the trip starts early and ends in Cusco before dinner time. Instead, enjoy a light snack with teas, coffees, wines, and pisco sours on the way.

In Cusco, we made our home at Antigua Casona San Blas. The staff was amazing, always going the extra mile to ensure our comfort. They arranged affordable taxis to explore the historic sights and helped us with our luggage whenever needed. Big thanks to Georgia and Lloyd for finding this lovely, reasonably priced place. Despite this, on our return night, we realized too late that we had booked somewhere else due to the hotel being fully booked. After a warm farewell over complimentary tea and coffee by the fireplace, we headed to Hotel El Mercado, our next spot in Cusco.

We decided to have an early dinner and stocked up on essentials like chocolates, water, and snacks for our upcoming adventure. The following day at 2 am, we’d be setting off for Peru’s breathtaking Rainbow Mountains. Can’t wait to share that experience next!
