Journey Through Messenia in Western Greece

Journey Through Messenia in Western Greece

I had heard great things about the castle of Methoni, which was built by the Venetians over 800 years ago. The history of Greece never ceases to amaze me; it’s so mystical and ancient.

The castle, jutting out into the sea, was completely ours to explore, making the experience surreal. We spent hours wandering through the old castle and along the rocky shores. This castle is unique because it was initially built by the Venetians, later occupied by the Ottomans, and finally came under Greek control. You can even go inside the turrets.

After exploring the castle, we headed over to Gialova, a quaint spot on the edge of Navarino Bay. We strolled through charming little streets that led us to the waterfront, where a mix of local restaurants offered irresistible fresh fish. We ended up ordering four plates that we quickly devoured, thanks to the appetite-inducing sea breeze.

Our day was moving fast, so we headed back to our hotel at Costa Navarino. I tried hard not to fall asleep on the return trip, feeling like I would miss out otherwise. Thankfully, I only dozed off for a moment. After a soothing massage, we spent some more time unwinding, grabbing a frappe and a beer on the beach, and catching up on relaxation.

Since it was our last night in Greece, we opted for a later dinner at Inbi, enjoying comfort food with a nightcap on the terrace. The trip was incredibly relaxing, and I was thrilled to finally experience a part of mainland Greece. Although it took us a while to get here, the only thing missing was a few extra days, as you can never have too much relaxation!
