The Faroe Islands is one of the top spots in the world to explore untouched natural beauty. The breathtaking landscapes, towering peaks, and incredible wildlife will surely leave you amazed.
Like any adventure to a natural site, it’s key to plan your trip to the Faroe Islands along with what you need to pack based on the activities and weather you expect. Recently, I had an unforgettable visit to the islands. Everywhere you look, even during a simple drive to the airport, you’ll be surrounded by stunning vistas.
Initially, I spent way too much time packing, repacking, and overpacking for our activities like hiking, rib-boat tours, and horseback riding. To help you avoid the hassle I went through, here’s a list of must-pack items for your trip:
The Faroe Islands’ location in the North Atlantic means the weather can change quickly, ranging from 3 to 13 degrees Celsius. Winters are mild, but there’s a strong wind chill and the coastlines can get quite cold.
Here are some essential clothing items you’ll need:
1. Windbreaker: The islands can be very windy, especially along the coast, so pack a good windbreaker to protect yourself from the gusts.
2. Thermals: Early mornings and evenings can be chilly, particularly in summer when daylight lasts about 18 hours. Thermals will keep you cozy, just like the island’s sheep.
3. Hat, Scarf, and Gloves: A good pair of gloves will keep your hands warm and dry, even while using your smartphone.
4. Waterproof Jacket: A waterproof jacket with a hood is necessary for those rainy days, especially in the mountains.
5. Walking Boots: Essential for the many hikes. You’ll need sturdy boots to navigate the often uneven and slippery terrain.
6. Sunscreen and Lip Balm: Despite the chilly weather, the sun can be quite strong, so protect your skin and lips.
7. Luggage: A sturdy suitcase with wheels makes travel easier. Avoid backpack-style luggage.
8. Camera Equipment: Bring all your gear, from smartphones to DSLRs, to capture the island’s beauty. A tripod is great for photographing the Northern Lights in winter.
9. Travel Adapter: The islands use a standard European 2 pin plug. It’s wise to pack one to avoid high airport prices.
10. Sunglasses: Even with unpredictable weather, UV-protected sunglasses will shield your eyes from the sun.
11. Layered Clothing: Pack layers like t-shirts and jumpers that you can adjust as temperatures change throughout the day.
12. Portable Charger: Since you’ll want to keep your devices powered up for photos and navigation, a good portable charger is invaluable.
With this guide, your trip to the Faroe Islands will be less about worrying what to pack and more about enjoying the incredible sights and experiences!
