York is one of those charming English cities that you simply have to visit. It’s packed with history, the delightful Yorkshire atmosphere, and an abundance of dining spots. With so many incredible things to see and do, it can be challenging to choose where to start. A trip to York should definitely include its best sights.
To help you out, I’ve picked some of my favorite spots in York that I believe you’ll enjoy.
First off, you can’t skip York Minster, the city’s most iconic building. It’s over 500 years old and among the largest in Yorkshire. You can appreciate its beauty from outside, but exploring its interior is truly special. Just note that there’s a small entrance fee, though a York Pass could save you money on entrance fees to many attractions. Don’t miss the chance to climb the tower—those 300 steps reward you with a spectacular city view.
Next, head to The Shambles, one of the oldest medieval streets in England, reminiscent of something straight out of a Harry Potter book. Once a place for selling meat, it’s now filled with charming craft stalls and wizard-themed shops. Spend time wandering through the stalls and enjoy the nearby markets.
For a relaxing experience, head to the riverside to rent a boat for your own little river adventure. If operating your own boat isn’t appealing, opt for a guided river cruise to learn more about York’s history while enjoying riverside views.
While in York, it’s fascinating to learn about one of its most notorious residents, Guy Fawkes. You can visit his old home, now the Guy Fawkes Inn, near York Minster, where you can enjoy a drink and soak in a bit of history.
York offers some of the best dining experiences too. Be sure to visit Roots, with its seasonal menu focusing on local produce. Make a reservation, as it’s popular. Another great spot is Mr P’s Curious Tavern, close to The Shambles, where the Whitby Crab comes highly recommended.
If you’re an art enthusiast, don’t miss the Art Gallery. It showcases both local and international artists, with temporary exhibitions and a notable pottery section.
Exploring York on foot is a must, especially its ancient city walls, which still stand today and illustrate its rich history. While walking around, check out Clifford’s Tower and venture into the Castle Museum for a mock-up experience of medieval York.
For a unique culinary experience, try Skosh—an exciting fusion restaurant. It’s recommended to share several dishes, tapas-style, for a delightful meal. Remember to book ahead to ensure you get a table.
If you’re staying in York overnight, consider Grey’s Court Hotel, centrally located and offering historic charm. It’s just moments from York Minster, and their breakfast, with home-smoked salmon, is a treat.
For a special afternoon tea, visit the Countess of York at the National Railway Museum. The carriage is beautifully restored, and the tea service is superb. Train enthusiasts will find the museum equally engaging.
History buffs should check out the Merchant Adventurers Hall, a stunning medieval building brimming with stories from the city’s past. Another historic spot is St Mary’s Abbey in the Museum Gardens, with its fascinating ruins that speak of a time before Henry VIII.
Finally, don’t miss the Jorvik Viking Centre, even if it’s just to dodge the rain. It’s perfect for learning about York’s Viking history with lifelike exhibits.
These are simply some of the best experiences York has to offer, and there’s so much more to explore in this captivating city. Enjoy your visit!
