11 Must-Experience Activities in Dubai

Dubai is a city that’s full of surprises. Beyond the shiny skyscrapers, there’s an abundance of award-winning restaurants, cultural spots, and amazing souks you’ll want to explore. There are just so many fantastic things to do throughout Dubai.

For a while, I thought Dubai was just another city, with all its glitz and sparkle but somehow devoid of culture. Have you ever felt that way? It can seem overly dazzling, if you know what I mean. But let me tell you, I was wrong! If you scratch beneath the surface, you’ll find a treasure trove of culture, art, and food to enjoy. Here are some amazing things you can do in Dubai, and if you ever need advice or tips, feel free to reach out. We’re always eager to help.

Before there was the modern Dubai we know today, the area was made up of small fishing villages along the shore. I love the city’s glamour, but I also appreciate seeing its older parts. Take some time away from the towering skyscrapers and visit the Bastakiya Quarter. It has stood the test of time amidst Dubai’s growth. There, you can explore historic buildings, wander through smaller souks, and admire the unique architecture of “old Dubai.” It’s one of my favorite things to do in the city.

To escape the midday heat, stop by the Dubai Museum to learn more about the region. If you’re like me, you’ll want to explore beyond the city after a few days. One of the most unique things about Dubai is that just outside its city limits, you’re met with stunning desert landscapes. You can spend a night in the desert in a luxurious Bedouin-style tent or explore the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Watching the sunset in the desert is unforgettable and one of the best experiences you can have in Dubai.

Seeing the sunrise from a hot air balloon is also a breathtaking experience. I was a bit nervous at first, but it’s totally worth it—especially at sunrise. You’ll be back in the city just in time for brunch and perhaps a dip in the pool, as it is a holiday after all! Consider staying at the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah for an iconic and luxurious experience.

Speaking of brunch, Dubai is making a name for itself with world-class cuisine and award-winning restaurants. I’ve fallen in love with brunch, as it’s an opportunity to linger in bed a bit longer—and no one judges you for having cake for breakfast! Head to Bubbalicious for a delicious brunch that satisfies the hungriest appetites. The Bubbalicious brunch combines a classic style with regional Middle Eastern dishes, offering a wonderful mix of flavors.

Exploring Dubai’s souks is still a must-do. They’re popular with visitors and can get busy, but it’s worth embracing the crowds. If you want to avoid most of the tourists, visit early in the morning, when the souks were traditionally bustling and still cool. I’m not generally a morning person, but I’d aim to get there as early as I can. While there, you can purchase local spices, explore the gold souks, and even try your hand at bartering with the shopkeepers—a skill in itself!

Falconry is a big part of Dubai’s heritage, recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. You can book an excursion to learn about these magnificent birds and even try guiding a falcon in the desert. It offers a fascinating glimpse into this aspect of the region’s history.

After a day in the city, visit the Bur Dubai Abra Dock. Walk along the boardwalk and witness some traditional trades that have long supported the region. Nowadays, only a few boats are still used for fishing, but they’re all there for you to enjoy. For a relaxing tour of Dubai’s coastline, hop on board and take in the ocean views—just remember your sunscreen to avoid a burn!

Dubai’s Miracle Garden is a stunning display of meticulously arranged gardens right within the city. Visit early in the day to admire these beautiful works of art. It’s a delight, and I’m eager to return to Dubai just to see it again, especially after visiting Singapore’s Cloud Forest, which I absolutely adored.

No trip to Dubai is complete without visiting the top of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. While it’s always a good time to go, twilight offers a magical view as the city lights up. A key tip is to buy your tickets in advance to skip long lines, particularly around sunset.

Chutney’s is one of the best Indian restaurants in Dubai, known for its delicious food at reasonable prices. Don’t miss their amazing black lentil dish—it’s too good to pass up.

Dubai is also establishing itself as a global art hub. With galleries and cultural centers popping up across the city, there’s plenty to see. Check out the Third Line Gallery for contemporary Middle Eastern art that changes every few months. It’s an eclectic mix of cultures and creativity that everyone can appreciate.
