Exploring Bali: The Tegalalang Rice Terrace and Gunung Kawi Temple Experience

The Tegalalang rice terraces in Ubud and the Gunung Kawi Temple are must-see spots in Bali. Our trip was all about relaxing and having fun, so we balanced our days between leisure and exploring the island. Following a delightful breakfast at our villa, we set off with our driver to the vibrant Tegalalang rice terraces in Ubud.

On arrival, we purchased entry tickets, although no one checked them, and they were quite cheap. During our previous visit, the terraces were dry after harvest, but this time they were lush and green. The views, as you walk through and around the terraces, are truly stunning.

Be prepared for donation requests to maintain the terraces. Although they’re said to be optional, they seemed almost mandatory. After paying at the first spot, I decided to skip the others as it felt a bit off. It turned out that more visitors opted out as well. Just a heads-up if you encounter these requests.

Remember, there’s minimal shade, so bring an umbrella, sunscreen, and a bottle of water. You can buy water from nearby stalls if needed.

Enthralled by the green landscape, we explored every corner of the terraces until thirst reminded us to head back to find water and our driver. Grateful for the car’s air-conditioning, our driver suggested a coffee break nearby. I hesitated due to the heat but became more accustomed as the day went on.

At the coffee plantation, we took a quick tour and sampled various coffees with diverse tastes, sure to find favorites. Afterward, we continued to the Gunung Kawi Temple, my first visit there. I was eager to explore despite the many steps leading to the temples.

Visitors must wear sarongs at the temple, which are provided with your entry fee. The temple’s intricate carvings, lush surroundings, and stream met all my expectations.

We roamed through the temple grounds, admiring its beauty and history. A huge spider added to the adventure with startled reactions from some visitors.

For a full view of the temple’s setting, climbing the stairs behind the temple is a must. Eventually, the humidity won, paired with hunger, so we concluded our visit.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a meal and drinks while cooling down, ready to explore more of Bali. The Tegalalang rice terraces and Gunung Kawi Temple are compelling reasons to visit Bali, adding to the island’s charm. If you’re planning a trip, make sure to explore all that Bali has to offer!
