10 Must-Taste London Restaurants You Should Visit

London is a treasure trove of dining experiences, with its vast array of restaurants, food markets, bars, and upscale dining spots spread across the city. With around 20,000 restaurants, it can be tough to narrow down the best ones to try. Having lived in London for nearly ten years, I’ve sampled both hidden gems and less impressive spots, so I’m eager to share some of my top picks.

One standout is the OXO Tower Restaurant, known for its remarkable views and delicious food. Positioned at the top of the OXO Tower building, it offers a mouthwatering menu of British dishes, perfect for a dinner with a view over the Thames, especially at sunset. When we visited, we indulged in their fresh lobster and salty fingers starter, followed by a rib-eye steak with a bone marrow crust, ideal when cooked medium-rare. If you have room for dessert, the OXO Chocolate Plate is a must-try.

Barrafina is another favorite, especially for those who love Basque and Spanish cuisine. Despite having three locations (Drury Lane, Dean Street, and Adelaide Street), Barrafina doesn’t take reservations. Arrive before the lunch crowd for a shorter wait, and don’t miss their fresh fish dishes. It’s slightly pricier than other tapas places, but the quality justifies it. Inside, you might feel like you’ve traveled to Spain.

Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden is not only stunning with its beautiful atrium but also offers exceptional contemporary French cuisine. For a more affordable experience, try their lunch menu. Remember to book in advance for peak times. Their herb-smoked Welsh lamb is particularly delightful, and as a Welsh person, I can assure you it’s worth tasting.

Bala Baya is where my love for Tel Aviv-inspired dishes meets reality. Located south of the River Thames, close to Borough Market, it’s nestled in the railway arches. Their Yemeni ceviche with cured spiced salmon and rhubarb, along with tasty cocktails like the ‘peach,’ are not to be missed.

Wolkite Kitfo in North London offers authentic Ethiopian food, tucked away from Holloway Road. It may not have fancy decor, but the food is what draws you in. It’s a hidden gem serving some of the best Ethiopian dishes around, far from the world of fine dining, but perfect for a delicious meal.

Kerridge’s Bar And Grill is situated in the Corinthia Hotel’s basement, offering a menu crafted by celebrity chef Tom. His modern take on British classics, like the pig cheek pie, is thoroughly enjoyable. Make sure to book a table on weekends, as it gets busy.

For a classic British meal, Poppies is the place for fish and chips. With locations in Camden and Shoreditch, they serve fresh fish with the tastiest chips in a casual setting. While not quite a sit-down restaurant, it’s a true fish and chips experience.

The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon at Fortnum and Mason’s is perfect for an elegant afternoon tea. Operating for nearly a century, it offers freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and jam, alongside an extensive tea selection. Booking in advance is advisable, especially on weekends.

Tramshed in East London combines Damien Hirst’s artwork with chef Mark Hix’s culinary expertise. Their menu focuses on meat dishes but includes vegetarian options as well. Their ‘bang bang’ chicken and ‘cock and bull’ croquettes are highlights.

Lastly, a Sunday roast is a must-have British tradition. The Harwood Arms in Fulham offers an outstanding roast, ideal for a lazy weekend lunch. If you’re elsewhere in the city, many good pubs also serve delicious Sunday roasts.
