Arguably Bali’s Most Spectacular Vista

Arguably Bali's Most Spectacular Vista

When visiting Bali, one must-see activity is heading up to the village of Kintamani. Whether you drive, walk, or cycle (if you’re feeling adventurous), you’ll be treated to a stunning view of Mount Batur.

Mount Batur is an active volcano that last erupted in 2000. It’s beautifully located next to Lake Batur, enhancing its dramatic landscape. Across Lake Batur, you’ll find Mount Abang. It’s interesting to note that Mount Abang was once part of Mount Batur until a massive eruption separated them in ancient times. In Indonesian and Malaysian, “Gunung” means mountain, so “Gunung Batur” translates to Mount Batur, something to keep in mind when you’re in Bali.

As soon as we arrived, it became clear we were in the mountains because the temperature dropped significantly! It was warm and a bit humid at our hotel near Kuta Beach, but by the time we reached Kintamani, it called for a jacket (which, of course, we forgot to pack). Eventually, we got accustomed to the chilly weather, but it’s wise to bring a light jacket or cardigan.

Upon reaching Kintamani, after stopping the car for some spontaneous “Ooohs” and “Aaahs” at the breathtaking view, our patient driver took us to a restaurant with an incredible view of Mount Batur. The scene was both beautiful and calming, like something straight out of a postcard. Yet, there was an eerie vibe too, knowing a powerful volcano lay beneath the serene surface.

We enjoyed the view while having lunch—even if the meal wasn’t the best. But let’s be honest, with a view like that, who would complain? As expected, numerous selfies were taken to share with friends back home.
