Spain offers so much more than just its stunning beaches and the Balearic Islands. Although those places are beautiful, the true essence of Spain lies in its diverse landscape and rich culture. Over the years, I’ve explored several parts of Spain and would love to share some of my favorite places that are perfect for a little getaway.
Spain is pretty big, so I’ve chosen locations scattered across the country to make it easier for you to visit a few, no matter where you start your journey. Whether you’re driving around or flying into a quaint Spanish town, these spots are worth exploring.
First up is Bilbao in the Basque country. At first glance, it might seem like a typical industrial port city, but it has so much more to offer. Visit the impressive Guggenheim Museum both for its architecture and its art. Don’t miss out on txikiteo, which involves hopping from one cozy bar to another in the old town, sipping local wine and savoring pintxos. If museums are more your thing, check out the Museum of Fine Arts or climb up to the top of Artxanda for fantastic views.
Then there’s Ronda, just an hour and a half drive from Malaga. This city is dramatically split in two by a canyon, creating a unique and breathtaking landscape. Legend has it, the city was split by divine intervention to stop local disputes. Today, Ronda stands as one of the most awe-inspiring places to visit in Spain.
Of course, there’s the age-old debate between Barcelona and Madrid. Truth is, both cities are amazing in their own ways. Barcelona is the perfect place for a city break with plenty of free attractions. You can’t visit without seeing Gaudi’s architectural wonders or catching the lively La Mercè festival. For a memorable sunset, head to Montjuic for panoramic views of the city.
On the northwest coast lies the awe-inspiring As Catedrais Beach near Ribadeo. It’s a stunning coastline with towering cliffs that require a ticket to explore due to visitor quotas, so plan ahead!
Albarracín in Teruel is a charming little town that feels like a fairy tale. Its cathedral, cobbled streets, and castle offer a scenic day out.
San Sebastian, also in the Basque region, captivates with its La Concha Beach and atmospheric old town filled with pintxos bars. After a beach stroll, explore the Parte Vieja and try some delightful local cuisine.
Cantabria in northern Spain is another fantastic destination, accessible via Bilbao or Santander. Make sure to visit Gaudi’s El Capricho and explore the natural beauty of the Picos de Europa National Park and the Magdalena Peninsula.
Montefrio, located near Granada, boasts a historical Moorish castle and offers stunning views from the Iglesia de la Encarnación and the Mirador National Geographic.
For wine enthusiasts, Rioja is a must-visit for vineyard tours. It’s a short drive from Bilbao, and Logroño offers historical exploration. Don’t miss viewing Michelangelo’s artwork at the Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda.
Valencia is a vibrant city unlike any other in Spain, featuring a science park, historical quarters, and a lovely waterfront. Consider dining at RiFF or watching a sunrise from a hot air balloon over Sierra De Mariola.
The Balearic Island of Ibiza is famed for its beauty, best enjoyed in the northern parts. Check out the sunset over Es Vedra and explore the local markets and old town. For a treat, consider a sailing trip to Formentera for pristine waters.
Seville is renowned for flamenco, the Alcazar, and its Gothic cathedral. Highlights include the Giralda Tower and the Metropol Parasol. Stop by Eslava for some delightful food without a siesta break.
Madrid, Spain’s dynamic capital, features attractions like the Prado Museum, Retiro Park, and the Royal Palace. A unique surprise is the Templo de Debod, an Egyptian temple gifted to Spain.
Granada, with its rich history and must-visit Alhambra, offers a deep dive into the Moorish era. Experience a flamenco show at Venta El Gallo for a unique cultural experience.
Malaga, often overlooked, is a hidden gem with its Alcazaba and Picasso Museum. The city’s Gothic cathedral and nearby tapas bars are well worth exploring.
With all these amazing places, Spain is a treasure trove of history, culture, and stunning landscapes waiting to be discovered.
